Experimental Investigation on Frost Heaving Force (FHF) Evolution in Preflawed Rocks Exposed to Cyclic Freeze-Thaw Conditions

چکیده

This work is aimed at investigating the structural deterioration and frost heaving force evolution characteristics of flawed rocks using a self-developed (FHF) measurement system. Three kinds preflawed with different flaw geometry parameters were used to conduct FHF tests. The testing results reveal five distinguished stages from curve; they are inoculation stage, explosive decline steady recovery sudden drop stage. In addition, secondary phenomenon found, peak value lower than initial value. Moreover, decreases increasing F-T cycle number, its decreasing rate becomes faster high cycle. affected not only by but also lithology. For low-pore hard rock, damage propagates quickly after occurrence freeze-thaw damage. It suggested that mesoscopic structure rock affects water migration water-ice phase transformation, can be fractured in preexisting flaws.

Freeze-thaw decay in sedimentary rocks: a laboratory study with CT under controlled ambient conditions

This study presents an experimental X-ray micro-CT study of the freeze-thaw processes in limestone under controlled ambient conditions. The processes weres studied with time-lapse micro-CT and dynamic micro-CT, using the Environmental X-ray CT (EMCT) at the Centre for X-ray Tomography of the Ghent University (www.ugct.ugent.be). The EMCT is a gantry-based system on which full μCT scans were aqu...

Simulating Martian Conditions: Methanogen Survivability during Freeze-thaw Cycles

Introduction: Methanogens are obligate anaerobes that use molecular hydrogen as an energy source and carbon dioxide as a carbon source to produce methane. They are classified as Archaea and are found in many extreme environments, including hydrothermal vents, volcanoes, and also the human microflora. The current Martian atmosphere is low in pressure, very dry (hyper-arid), and high in radiation...

Freeze-Thaw Bayesian Optimization

In machine learning, the term “training” is used to describe the procedure of fitting a model to data. In many popular models, this fitting procedure is framed as an optimization problem, in which a loss is minimized as a function of the parameters. In all but the simplest machine learning models, this minimization must be performed with an iterative algorithm such as stochastic gradient descen...

AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF GRAVITY DRAINAGE DURING IMMISCIBLE GAS INJECTION IN CARBONATE ROCKS UNDER RESERVOIR CONDITIONS

Gravity drainage is one of the important recovery mechanisms in fractured carbonate and conventional reservoirs. It occurs due to density difference between the gas in fracture and the oil in matrix as well as in conventional tilted reservoirs. Oil phase will form films which are produced under gravity forces (film flow). Many gas injection experiments have been done on laboratory scales with d...

Investigation on the Mechanical Properties of a Cement-Based Material Containing Carbon Nanotube under Drying and Freeze-Thaw Conditions

This paper aimed to explore the mechanical properties of a cement-based material with carbon nanotube (CNT) under drying and freeze-thaw environments. Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry and Scanning Electron Microscopy were used to analyze the pore structure and microstructure of CNT/cement composite, respectively. The experimental results showed that multi-walled CNT (MWCNT) could improve to differ...
